Naturopathy (also known as naturopathic medicine, alternative medicine, and complementary medicine) is viewed as a specialist area of medicine. However, you do not need a referral to see a Naturopath.
Naturopathy can best be defined as a holistic health care system as opposed to a specific technique or set of techniques. While symptomatic treatment is part of naturopathic medicine, the emphasis is on preventing disease and educating patients.
Many people are unsure of what to expect from a visit to a naturopath. In particular, how this might differ from seeing your family doctor or GP.
Firstly, Naturopaths do not replace GPs.
However, many of the problems you would consult a GP about can also be supported with naturopathic treatment. Under the guidance of a qualified naturopath, naturopathic medicine can work in conjunction with mainstream medicine.
Naturopaths use non-invasive techniques in their treatments. The most common therapies and techniques used by a naturopath are:
- Lifestyle Counselling
- Herbal Medicine
- Functional Pathology Testing
Each patient is seen as an individual. Treatments and medicines are individually tailored to meet your requirements.
Naturopathic consultations are not covered by Medicare, however private health fund rebates may be available if your fund covers natural therapies.
Naturopaths are typically accredited by national associations such as the Australian Traditional Medicine Society, which ensure that practitioners have undergone the required training, and comply with the highest standards of naturopathic practice.
This is also a requirement for patients to receive private health rebates.
It is also very important to inform your naturopath of any medications you are taking. Some treatments can interact with each other, and your health care practitioners will be better able to treat you if they know every therapy you are using.
Naturopathy is an approach to health care which aims to:
- Find and treat the cause, not only the symptoms.
- Support the body’s natural healing ability.
- Provide a foundation so that illness is less likely to occur in the future.
